How to Prepare for an Interior and Exterior Renovation

How to Prepare Yourself and all Aspects of Your House

for an Interior and Exterior Renovation

An Interior and Exterior Renovation coming your way? First of all, it is worth it to note that any renovation or remodeling, no matter how small, could present various complications. For starters, the limits for the use of the space, the dirt, strange people walking in and out of your house, and honestly, the invasion of personal space could drive your anxiety. You have to wage on the benefits when you make the decision involving any construction at your house. However, to prepare yourself and to manage your expectations could help assure the project goes well.

Talk to your contractor about the renovations

Start by establishing a dialog and trust with your contractor; he will be the best source of information. Walk through the spaces he will be working on and ask questions related to the process of the of the Interior and Exterior Renovation. At this point, make sure you understand the overall steps it takes to make your project happen. Also, get an approximate time estimation.

Evaluate the size and impact of the remodeling project

Ask yourself questions related to the space in renovation and how you plan to accommodate.

  • Is the space being renovated an area you and your family currently use? How often?
  • Should you store things away, or should you set up space, somewhere else,  to replace that space you will lose?
  • Should you cover things up in the surrounding areas. Covering is especially important if the interior or exterior renovation requires painting or sheet-rock work. A good contractor will do his best to isolate the spaces, but some debris always finds escaping routes to land on your favorite piece of furniture and such. Thus we recommend you cover things on your own as well.
  • Find ways to isolate the area and try to avoid traffic while the work is being done.
  • Schedule ahead and talk to the members of your family, so everybody is on the same page about the arrangements.

Be flexible with time and possible inconveniences

When it comes to construction, have into mind there might be other problems that will arise with your remodeling. Maybe you discover problems you didn’t know you had. On another hand, the weather and terrain could affect the timeline and process of the project. For example, rain and cold weather could delay paint jobs; extreme heat could make it dangerous for people to work on roofs, etc.

How to Assess Roof Damage After a Storm

First, do not climb onto your roof. Walking or standing on the roof could be more dangerous after a storm. Instead, walk around the property and observe what you can see.

Look for shingles that seem cracked or peeled off, if you don’t see many, the damage can be less significant. Walk around inside your house and look for water leaks as well. Either way, let a qualified Roofing Contractor inspect your roof. Have in mind that inspections are mostly free and your insurance most likely will cover the cost of the repairs.

How to Submit Roofing Insurance Claims

Give your insurance company a call to see the how long you have to file your claim.

Survey all the areas of the house that you can safely access, look for damage:

  • Walk around the outside and inspect your frames, doors, windows, brick. outside paint and gutters.
  • Check for dents, look at your garage door panels and any metal structure you have outside.
  • Take a look at your fence and backyard items like a metal BBQ and such.
  • Survey the ceiling of your home and Attic., looking for water leaks.

After you have personally assessed everything you could, call your insurance company again and ask them about the specific coverage on the policy.

They will assign an agent to help you and send an adjuster to your home to assess the damage. Also, Get an appointment with a roofing contractor to meet with the adjuster on site!

Meet Gabriel Elias, Voyage Dallas Interview

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Elias.

Gabriel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?

Elias Roofing and Home Improvements began after one of my older brothers decided to start his own company. My brother, Jose Elias was the most hardworking person I have ever met; and he founded this company 30 years ago.

After working in the community of Mesquite for quite a while, he realized that the people closest to him had a great need. People needed help maintaining and improving their homes. Jose realized he could be a trusting person everyone could afford. So, slowly, he found great associates to help him and little by little, he was able to gain the trust and support of the community.

Fast forward 20 years and here I am taking over my brother’s dream. I am so proud to carry on with his legacy, and I look forward to continuing to grow what he started. Elias Roofing and Home Improvements currently employs over 20 families in North and East Dallas. Besides, we strive to give our customers a great remodeling experience.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

The most significant struggle has been my brother Jose Elias’ passing. After years of working by his side, I learned to admire him and his tenacity. When my brother got sick, I could not face seeing such a strong person so vulnerable.

I understood then that what we do on this earth is worth more than an empty existence. I realize my brother was an important person for many and that he built Elias Roofing with a purpose. I want to continue with his legacy, providing the best roofing and remodeling service we can.

Please tell us about Elias Roofing and Home Improvements.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?

Having lots of family members always brings tons of adventures to your life. I have a big family that I am relatively close to. My childhood was full of hide and seek moments, “asados” and endless birthdays that finished up in sleepovers and sometimes 2 or 3 days of continuous playing. I have too many amazing memories from my childhood that keep me positive and hopeful.
